World Energy Saving Day: How can technological advancement be aligned with environmental care?

In the context of an environmental crisis, Furukawa Electric offers its Green Solutions to contribute to protecting the ecosystem by reducing energy consumption by 70%.

As a result of the climate crisis that began a few years ago, the World Energy Forum took the initiative to commemorate World Energy Saving Day every 21st of October. This date is intended to raise awareness of the need to work together to develop policies and actions that contribute to energy efficiency and the preservation of natural resources. Furukawa Electric, a manufacturer of complete solutions for Communication and Energy Networks, argues that technological progress in the field of connectivity and telecommunications can contribute to a more responsible use of energy.

The current challenge is to be able to produce and consume energy, mitigating the negative effects on the ecosystem. However, how does this problem relate to fiber optics? When it comes to the environment, fiber optics is preferred over copper cables, since the latter generate a greater loss of data transmission with greater energy consumption, given their poor performance during data transmission. In addition, they consume a total of 3.5 W per 100 meters, compared to just 1 W consumed when using fiber optic cables, which conducts light beams over a distance of 300 meters.

Fiber optic cables are immune to electromagnetic interference, unlike copper cables, which consume a greater amount of energy and the quality of their performance is considerably lower. The latter affects the environment when fossil fuels are used to operate the cooling systems required for assembly and maintenance.  Similarly, one of the greatest advantages when using an optical solution is due to the resistance of its materials, since the glass wires that make up its interior are the thickness of a hair and, even so, last for many years, while the copper wires suffer oxidation and overheating due to the temperature changes suffered by this metal.

Within the Japanese company´s portfolio of solutions are the Green Solutions, which are characterized by innovation, performance and greater sustainability. The materials produce less smoke and zero toxic gas emissions, are 100% recyclable and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Green Solutions generate 70% energy savings and reduce the use of plastic by 87%.

Green IT Program: a smart way to replace and recycle

Furukawa Electric's Green IT program has been operating since 2007. The initiative is mainly focused on optimizing the treatment of waste derived from copper cables that have completed their life cycle and replacing them with environmentally friendly solutions.  Through a set of actions articulated between the manufacturer, business partners and customers, it is intended to significantly reduce the use of non-renewable resources, save energy and protect the environment from harmful materials.

Technology must be sustainable and future-proof. That is why green solutions offer innovation, performance and sustainability, so that organizations and partners can responsibly choose the technological solution that best meets the demands of their company in an increasingly responsible context.
